A new report by the International Energy Agency (IEA) has said misalignment between regional hydrogen definition methodology risks market fragmentation.
The Towards hydrogen definitions based on their emissions intensityreport is aimed at informing policymakers, producers, investors and researchers ahead of the G7 Climate, Energy and Environmental Ministerial Meeting on April 15-16, 2023.
It said existing efforts to establish green hydrogen definitions have some commonalities in scope, system boundaries, production pathways, and emissions intensity levels, but inconsistencies in approaches risk becoming a barrier for the development of international hydrogen trade.
“The G7 has a critical role in scaling up the production and use of low-emission hydrogen, ammonia and hydrogen-based fuels within member countries and stimulating developments in the rest of the world,” the IEA wrote.
